About Billabong
Billabong was founded by Gordon Merchant in Burleigh Heads (on the Australian Gold Coast) in 1973. He combined his passion for surfing with hard work to design boardshorts; manufacturing them on his kitchen table and selling through local surf shops and markets.
Since the 70’s Billabong has continually improved every phase of its operations to become one of the world’s leading makers of surfwear and accessories (or surf accessories). Indeed Billabong has expanded its portfolio to include boardsport products such as wetsuits, watches, surfboards, snowboard outerwear and skateboarding clothing. Furthermore Billabong wallets have become one of the most sought after wallets in the world.
During the 80’s Billabong went international, initially exporting to New Zealand, Japan, Europe and California, then to the rest of the world through international licensing providing the Billabong licensee met high standards.
